Purpose built student accommodation
Transforming an industrial site within a historic setting
One of the key design influences was the sites historic setting within Edinburgh’s Conservation Area. The building accommodates 423 student residents, each with an en-suite bedroom in a selection of studio and HMO apartments. A finalist in two separate national award categories it also houses a dedicated management facility, common room and roof top terrace.
Formed as a perimeter block and central courtyard the proposal takes strong influence from the traditional and historic urban development of Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns. The proposal is within 250m of the Palace of Hollyrood and the Scottish Parliament. When viewed from Arthur’s Seat the building’s green roof and blonde sandstone elevations sit proud within the cityscape.
The high quality use of traditional blonde sandstone, crisp white render and tall slender window openings creates a contemporary but respectful building.
